Outsourcing Bioinformatics Analysis: How We Can Help

This is the third installment of the “Are You Swimming in Data?” series. Click the links here to read the first and second articles.

The World of Data

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to data analysis and interpretation. In the world of modern genomics, the variety of data types has expanded, both in the origins of the data (RNA seq, for example) and the resolution of the data (e.g. bulk versus single cell).

Thus, the sophisticated projects of today’s biologists and bench scientists require custom bioinformatic solutions. Cutting edge biomedical research lies where the kinds of questions being asked cannot be answered by tools off the shelf.

What Makes Bridge Informatics Unique

The question is, who can not only build these custom analysis pipelines, but has an integrated understanding of bioinformatics, computer science, and biology to be able to explain the applications and outputs of these tools? Our data scientists have this unique skill set, with 90% of them having extensive experience in wet lab research, developing assays and the understanding of what a bench scientist scientist goes through  and the problems that  need to be solved.

Types of Experiments and Analysis

This puts our team in a prime position to build pipelines for rapidly growing areas of biological research. Data types like RNA sequencing are processed and interpreted differently than DNA sequence data. Both data types are also affected by their resolution, whether they are bulk or single cell.

Short read versus long read sequencing technologies also have different applications and staggeringly different analysis protocols. Interrogation of well-known sections of the human genome can leverage less expensive short read technology. On the other hand, growing research areas like microbiome analysis need specialized tools like long read sequencing and ribosomal RNA sequencing.

Dan Ryder, MPH, PhD

Dan is the founder and CEO of Bridge Informatics, a professional services firm helping pharmaceutical companies translate genomic data into medicine. Unlike any other data analytics firm, Bridge forges sustainable communication change between their client’s biological and computational scientists. Dan is particularly passionate about improving communication between people of different scientific backgrounds, enabling bioinformaticians and software engineers to collectively succeed.

Prior to forming Bridge Informatics, Dan served in a variety of roles helping pharmaceutical clients solve early phase drug discovery and development challenges. Dan received both a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and an MPH in Disease Control from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). He completed his postdoctoral studies in Molecular Pathways of Energy Metabolism at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dan received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin. Click here to connect with Dan on LinkedIn.
